Background Over the last decade, the four countries around Lake Chad Basin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria have experienced unprecedented crises exacerbated by repeated incidences of violence from the Boko Haram terrorist group. In response to the situation, the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), in partnership with African Union (AU) Commission with support from UNDP, developed the Regional Strategy for the Stabilization, Recovery & Resilience of the Boko Haram-affected Areas of the Lake Chad Basin (RSS). The RSS provides a comprehensive, integrated, and multilevel framework for overall stabilization through nine inter-related pillars, including military support to the MNJTF, humanitarian assistance, and critical interventions to secure early recovery and long-term resilience. UNDP has developed the Regional Stabilization Facility (RSF) for the Lake Chad Basin region in support of the RSS implementation. The RSF is set up with four national windows, one window for each of the countries affected by the crisis: Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria. The four national windows cover stabilization activities under the primary stabilization component. To support the implementation of the strategy, the RSS Secretariat has developed the Territorial Action plans in collaboration with the Governor’s offices of the...

PNUD TCHAD

Background Over the last decade, the four countries around Lake Chad Basin, including Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, have experienced repeated incidences of violence from the Boko Haram terrorist group. These crises have deepened instability, slowed economic growth, and engendered deep humanitarian concerns in the region. Additionally, the spread of radicalization, especially amongst youth, remains an imminent threat to peace, stability, and development. Absolutist ideologies that reject co-existence, tolerance, and progress represent an existential threat to these countries. These ideologies have found recruits amongst the youth who believe that the state has failed and that they are excluded from legitimate political and economic processes from time to time. Largely overlooked now due to Boko Haram activities in the region, the crisis has created an urgent humanitarian need for about 10.7 million people in the area.    On 30 August 2018, the Council of Ministers of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) adopted the Regional Strategy for the Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RSS) to ensure stabilization of the region of the Boko Haram-affected areas of the Lake Basin Region. The RSS was endorsed by the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union. The strategy elaborates an overarching...

INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE (IRC)

Job Description: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity, and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. Located in the Sahel region of Africa, Chad is grappling with regional refugee crises in addition to seasonal droughts and flooding that destroy crops and threaten millions of people with hunger. For more than a decade, Chad has been a home to refugees. In 2004, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees from Darfur poured into eastern Chad, where many remain more than a dozen years later. Due to escalating conflict in the neighboring Central African Republic, thousands have fled to southern Chad. In addition, the humanitarian situation in the Lake basin region has been deteriorating since the outbreak of violence in northern Nigeria in January 2015, which caused thousands of displaced people. Incursions and attacks by Boko Haram group continue to ravage the Lac province, resulting in internal displacement. People are also moving as they are affected by...
