Campaign To Prevent Non-prescription (over-the-counter) Antibiotic

Purpose of consultancy To contribute to the development of a global campaign to prevent non-prescription antibiotic sales. Background Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is recognized as one of the top ten global threats facing humanity. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, are the main drivers in the development of drug-resistant pathogens. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) carry the greatest burden of AMR. In these contexts, antibiotics are often sold without prescriptions from community pharmacies, drug stores and other vendors. The AMR Awareness, Campaigns and Advocacy Unit is mandated to coordinate AMR awareness and campaign efforts, including the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW). A new campaign will be developed to prevent non-prescription antibiotic sales, without adversely affecting access to effective treatments for infectious diseases. Deliverables: Deliverable 1: Conduct a draft review of policies on dispensing antibiotics without prescriptions (e.g., bills, acts, laws, decrees and regulations) in 15-20 countries across the WHO regions. The review should comprehensively examine the legislative and regulatory frameworks guiding the sale and dispensing of antibiotics.
