L'IRC Burundi fait partie de la région des Grands Lacs, composée du Burundi, RCA, RDC et de la Tanzanie. A ce jour, l'IRC Burundi a mis en place un programme dynamique englobant la protection de l'enfance, la relance économique et le développement (ERD) ainsi que la santé environnementale. Actuellement, il existe un programme dynamique de protection de l'enfance qui consiste à renforcer les systèmes de désinstitutionalisation, à prévenir la séparation des enfants des personnes qui s’en occupent, à renforcer les mécanismes communautaires de protection de l'enfance, à travailler directement avec les enfants et avec les parents/personnes qui s’en occupent pour améliorer l'environnement protecteur des enfants.
