BACKGROUND: African Parks is a non-profit conservation organization that takes on the complete responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of national parks in partnership with governments and local communities. We currently manage 22 national parks and protected areas in 12 countries covering over 17 million hectares in: Angola, Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Zambia, South Sudan and Zimbabwe. Odzala harbours some of the largest populations of Western lowland gorilla and forest elephant in Central Africa protected areas covered 13,500 km2. It has the richest primate fauna of Central Africa, with at least 10 diurnal primate species, including gorillas and chimpanzees. The park also supports a large diversity of tropical forest ungulates, such as bongo, sitatunga, red river hog, giant forest hog and at least seven species of forest duikers. The forest-savannah mosaic probably hosts the last viable population of spotted hyenas in the Congo Basin while a viable population of hippopotamuses can be found in open areas along the park’s larger rivers.
